Chapter Eight

The next morning after Adam went to work, Verna took Amanda Rebecca in the buggy back to Delia’s flower farm. Amanda Rebecca bounced on the seat next to her the entire drive, jiggling and swinging her legs in excitement.

“I hope the gray kitten hasn’t been taken,” Amanda Rebecca said. “I hope no one else wanted her!”

“I think the chances of the gray kitten still being there are very high, honey,” Verna chuckled.

Farms were forever finding themselves with litters of kittens they weren’t expecting, and Delia would have a challenge finding homes for that newest litter. Maybe a few of them would be good mousers. But she’d have to make sure she got the female cats spayed, or else she’d have another surprise litter, no doubt.

When Verna pulled onto Delia’s property, young Moses was the one who met them.

“Hi, Mandy!” he said. So it seemed that her little nickname was already flourishing over here, too. Verna couldn’t bring herself to say anything, especially since Amanda Rebecca had made a friend. That could be difficult enough sometimes without adults meddling in the middle.

“Hi!” Amanda Rebecca hopped down. “I get a kitten, Moses!”

“Really?” Moses looked up at Verna. “She can have one?”

“Do you still have the gray one?” Amanda Rebecca asked. “The gray one with the white nose?”

“Yah...we’ve still got all of them,” Moses said with a laugh. “You want to come find your kitten?”

Delia emerged from the house then and waved at Verna.

“Come inside, Verna!” she called. “Have you returned for a kitten?”

“Yah! They’re going to choose it now.” Verna draped a blanket over the horse’s back and put a feed bucket within reach for him. Then she headed over to the house where her friend was waiting.

“That’ll bring me down to six kittens to find homes for,” Delia chuckled as she held the door for Verna. “Come in. I’m just finishing up some baking. I can’t put off the bread any longer.”

The house smelled of yeasty rising dough, and the stove pumped heat out into the room.

“Are you sure you don’t want two kittens?” Delia asked with a twinkle. “Or three?”

“No, no!” Verna laughed. “One is all we can handle now, and I don’t want to go back to Adam asking for more cats. He’s been patient enough.”

“How are things going?” Delia asked as she turned a bowl of dough out onto the countertop.

“Well... I tried to flirt,” Verna said with an embarrassed laugh. “I didn’t make you proud, Delia. I’m afraid I confused him more than anything.”

“Oh, no,” Delia chuckled. “It’s to your credit that you have no practice at it, Verna.”

“Except, now that I’m married, I need to learn how to do some of these things rather quickly.”

“I know...” Delia cast her an understanding smile. “That’s the way it is, isn’t it? But the beautiful thing about a marriage is that you have nothing but time. You have the rest of your life.”

“Yah. And he did say he didn’t mind if I flirted a little.” Verna winced. “That was after I explained what I was doing.
